Mark Morris Dance Center: Meet Andrea Guajardo

Meet Andrea Guajardo, co-director of Ballet Napantla

Ballet Napantla rehearses at the Dance Center

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you're working on.

Being a Mexican American who grew up in the ballet/contemporary world, I decided to found Ballet Nepantla because of the importance and need to represent the beauty of my culture through dance. Alongside my co-director, Martin Rodriguez, we create work that fuses contemporary dance & Mexican Folklorico to explore new interpretive ways of delving into cultural & historical in-between-ness. Currently, we are working on our newest work "Valentina", a collection of stories that speak to the strength and resilience of the Mexican woman.

Why do you love dance?

Dance has always been my creative outlet. Through dance and especially through Ballet Nepantla, I am truly able to express who I am as a person, an artist, and as a Mexican American.

Why do you love rehearsing at the Dance Center?

The beautiful studios of Mark Morris Dance Center always provide us with an optimal creative workspace. The ballet barres make the studios perfect for our company classes and the studios are so large and ideal for rehearsing for big stage performances.
